One of the historic cities of Spain is Alicante and a part of the Valerian community. The city has a history of about 7000 years which include dynasties like the Greeks, Phoenician, Romans, Moors and later the Christian rulers. The city is also rich in many places of tourist interest.
Santa Maria Basilica:
The basilica is considered to be the best example for the traditional Gothic architecture. It is believed to have been constructed in the 14th century and completed in the 16th century. Archeologists are of the opinion that this Basilica is actually built over a mosque. It has single nave and the buttresses of the Basilica is surrounded by six chapels on all its sides. It is certainly a place which no visitor should miss.
San Nicolas Cathedral:
Believed to have been built in the year 1613 by the greatest architect of the times Agustin Bernardino. It is actually built over an existing mosque. This is yet another building of architectural marvel. The side chapels, the dome with blue colored decoration, are certainly the unique character of this Cathedral. There is a chapel called the ‘the Holy communion’ which is actually built in a rare combination of Baroque Spanish architecture design.
Museums:
There are many museums in Alicante. However, the most popular amongst them is the Archeological museum of Alicante. Interestingly the museum has unbelievable collection of works of arts and artifacts and some of the collections are believed to be as old as 100,000 years. There are numerous works of arts which are carried out during the 19th century also. This is yet another place which no one should miss.
The defense towers:
These towers are believed to have been built during the 15th century and renovated during the 18th century were used to protect the city from pirates and other intruders. History says that it was mainly intended to protect against Barbary pirates. This masterpiece work had many pillars and most of the towers have tumbled down and now about 20 towers are still remaining.
Apart from this, if you are planning to visit the city during summer you can also take part in the famous Bonfire of Saint John festival. The other places of interest include the Castle of San fernando, Canónigas de San Agustín Convent, Monastery of Santa Faz are some of the places of interest in Alicante. In short, Alicante is a city which has many things to offer to the tourist.
